Understanding STCs
Behind the scenes, your “rebate” is a stack of government-issued certificates that your installer sells for you. Here’s the journey from your roof to your invoice.
The federal scheme creates a fixed number of Small-scale Technology Certificates (STCs) per kWh of approved battery.
Example 13.5 kWh battery = 91.8 STCs
STCs trade on an open market — price moves daily based on supply and demand, like a commodity.
Today ~$37 per STC (range $35–40)
When you sign the contract, you assign your STCs to the installer. They handle the paperwork and pay you the dollar value.
Maths 91.8 × $37 = $3,397
You never see the certificates change hands — the $3,397 just appears as a line item on your invoice, off the top.
You pay the lower price, day one
