Quick checklist

Eligibility & requirements

Make sure your setup ticks every box before you claim — we’ll verify these for you during the quote.

Federal rebate

Your battery must:

  • CEC-approved — certified on the Clean Energy Council product list
  • Installed by an SAA-accredited installer
  • VPP-capable on a grid-connected system
  • Nominal capacity between 5 kWh and 100 kWh

NSW bonus

NSW VPP bonus requires:

  • Property is located in NSW
  • Battery capacity between 2 kWh and 28 kWh
  • Connected to an approved VPP provider
  • Grid-connected system, paired with solar

Understanding STCs

How your rebate actually works

Behind the scenes, your “rebate” is a stack of government-issued certificates that your installer sells for you. Here’s the journey from your roof to your invoice.

  1. 1

    Government issues certificates

The federal scheme creates a fixed number of Small-scale Technology Certificates (STCs) per kWh of approved battery.

    Example 13.5 kWh battery = 91.8 STCs

  2. 2

    Certificates have market value

STCs trade on an open market — price moves daily based on supply and demand, like a commodity.

Today ~$37 per STC (range $35–40)

  3. 3

    Installer buys your STCs

When you sign the contract, you assign your STCs to the installer. They handle the paperwork and pay you the dollar value.

    Maths 91.8 × $37 = $3,397

  4. 4

    Applied as an instant discount

You never see the certificates change hands — the $3,397 just appears as a line item on your invoice, off the top.

You pay the lower price, day one

Key points to remember

Why timing matters

  • You already lost rebate value once — don’t lose more by waiting.
  • Batteries in the 10–14 kWh range are least affected by the new rules.
  • NSW customers can stack the federal STC rebate with the state VPP bonus for the biggest discount.
  • The rebate is applied at purchase — instant discount on the invoice, no paperwork on your end.
  • The program runs to 2030 but the rebate reduces every 6 months. Earlier = more.
